In 2013, a banner was installed along the waterfront in Hong Kong that replicated the hazy skyline behind it to provide a picturesque, smog-free skyline as a pleasing backdrop for tourist photos. Many publicly-accessible online images present both skylines—the real skyline and the banner skyline—in the same photo. Curtain borrows the form of the banner from this 2013 initiative; however, rather than present an idealized skyline like the original banner does, the piece depicts the smog-filled air. These sections of the real gray and dingy sky are sourced from the margins of appropriated tourist photos taken in front of the banner.
